Spoon Carving
Weekend Class, Open to All
In this weekend course, students will create their own path in spoon carving by learning various spoon carving designs and techniques that they can replicate and practice on their own. Spoon carving is an introduction to the greater world of woodworking; skills from this class will extend into other forms of craft.
In this two-day course we cover all manner of approaches to spoons, from the use of the most basic axes and hand tools such as straight and bent knives to the use of other woodworking tools such as draw knives, spokeshaves and carving gouges. We will use many forms of holding devices such as shave horses, ropes, vices and clamps. Safe use of a bandsaw will be covered.
The course will start with basic hand tool demonstrations. While students are encouraged to bring their own tools, there will be a number of different types of knives, both straight and curved, available to use and share. We will discuss and experiment with various knife edge shapes and curved knife profiles to imagine the bent knives each student will create. At this time we will also cover methods for holding spoon blanks to increase safety and reduce hand fatigue.
Students should complete at least one spoon over the weekend, hopefully more!
