Keunho Peter Park
Keunho Peter Park is a woodworking artist and studio furniture maker based in Philadelphia. He creates anthropomorphic and organic forms of functional objects, furniture, and musical instruments. His work is inspired by personal experience and love of music, and by organic forms of nature such as the human body.
"The beauty of the human body and characteristic forms of various living creatures always inspire me,” he says. “This naturally leads me to take interest in organic forms and to create anthropomorphic forms. To achieve this, I use segmented carving techniques which enables me to make liberal forms and sizes. I also use different textures and colors to add unique features to each work.”
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Peter grew up in South Korea. He holds a BFA in painting from South Korea’s Kookmin University and an MFA in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
He was the 2015 recipient of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show’s Wharton Esherick Award: Excellence in Wood, an Emerging Artist Award Winner at the Philadelphia Invitational Furniture show in 2015, and was a Windgate resident artist at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Peter also has taught workshops about free-form woodcarving and musical instrument making at the Society of Contemporary Craft and Peters Valley. He has taught wood and furniture at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia since 2016, and presents his works in U.S. and South Korea.
“I constantly explore innovative construction formats to create organic forms and explore the sensory experience and sculptural qualities that could be derived from a functional object made out of wood.”
