Woodturning: Form, Texture, and Finish on Vessels 2024

Woodturning: Form, Texture, and Finish on Vessels

5 Days, Open to All

Spring 2024
May 13-17

In this one-week course, students will spend time turning various bowl shapes, using turning tools and mini, benchtop lathes to achieve their desired shape. Led by Elizabeth Weber, students will practice drawing inspiration from the world around them and learn how to successfully transfer those ideas onto the vessels they have created. The class will include surfacing techniques that will be used to further enhance their work. These techniques include carving, texturing, and the application of color using milk paints and acrylics. By the end of the class, you should have multiple pieces that tell a story inspired by your own personal experience.

During this one-week course, students will learn and practice the basics of bowl turning on lathes. Vessels will be inspired by the students personal story to influence form, layout, finishing techniques and more. Students will produce multiple vessels during the week with varying degrees of completion depending on personal preference. Proper lathe safety, tool choice and use, and sharpening will be covered.

Elizabeth also will direct students on surface applications such as texturing, carving, and finish applications to produce unique projects for each student. Safety, sharpening, and tool use will be covered topics for this portion of the course.

Ultimately, each student will produce unique vessels reflective of their own personal inspiration and story, and will walk away from the course with confidence in the use of wood lathes, and various surfacing techniques to continue to explore and practice.
