In this six day course, students will learn traditional Japanese wood carving techniques and painting using Japanese saws, chisels, gouges and paint brushes. Students will carve unique wrinkles and paint to their own personal preferences.

In this six-day course, each student will carve their own Okina Noh Theater mask from a block of wood to finish under the tutelage of master carver Hideta Kitazawa-san. Hideta teaches mask making with traditional materials and techniques practiced in Japan for over 600 years. Okina is a God of Noh Theater; he brings us happiness and a peaceful world.

Required Tools

  • Pencil

  • Ruler

  • Compass  

  • Mallet or hammer 

  • Paint brushes 

  • Japanese Saw - smaller sizes will be useful

  • If you have any other carving tools, please bring them along!  

Prerequisites

Open to all. Beginners are encouraged to apply.
